Welcome to Hooked on Walking holidays and our walking holidays in Italy. This particular hiking vacation is a self guided walking tour around the island of Elba located just off the mainland of Italy and not far from Pisa. Legend says that when the Tyrrhenian goddess Venus emerged from the waves of the sea, seven gemstones fell from her tiara, and so the Islands of the Tuscan Archipelago were born, of which Elba is the largest. Its natural beauty and natural resources has long attracted visitors. High granite cliffs and sandy beaches alternate each other along the rugged coastline with each inlet different from the next. Inland there are many small picturesque villages worth discovering. The many footpaths on the island take you through shady forests to high peaks and ridges with 360° views across the island and down to the typical low Mediterranean vegetation and great beaches.
Elba is 10 km from the mainland and is 224 square kilometres. It has a population of about 30,000 and it is divided into 8 municipalities. You can reach Elba by ferry and the journey takes 1 hour or by hydrofoils , which take 20-30 minutes.
In addition to the natural beauties there is the wonderful sea with 10 km of sandy beaches, 4 km of pebbly beaches and 3 km of cliffs. The highest mountain is Monte Capanne (1018m) and you can reach the top with a small, cable car, if you have a head for heights.
